Beloved

Renewing the mind

We are God’s beloved sons and daughters if we give our lives to Him and accept His acceptance of us!
We may have had an encounter with the love of God for one moment in our lives and even given our lives to Him as a result of it.
Hopefully though we keep experiencing his love on a daily basis. But often we don’t even if we somewhere deep down know this love to be true, we don’t feel it all the time. Why?
Because our minds need to be renewed. We are used to thinking we are rejected, abandoned, not loved at all. In part because people hurt us and fall short of loving us the way they should. And in part because we often don’t understand the reason of pain and suffering in our life and in the world and therefore we blame God and don’t believe He truly loves us. At least not at that moment when we are in pain.
But truth is that He loves us all the time. His love for us does not depend on how we feel or how we have been doing that day. We can’t earn it and therefore we can’t loose it.
It’s a choice we daily have to make to keep believing in his love for us even if we don’t feel it. Even if we are in pain. Even if we messed up. Even…you fill it in…It’s there all the time!
It takes an intentional effort to do this. Maybe a thousand times a day. To stand up against the lies that come into our minds due to people and circumstances and failures, lies that say we are not loved, we are not wanted, we are not accepted. But we are loved by the God of the universe who is our Father, and He is a good father no matter what other’s are saying.

Another thing that we need to do to stay aware of his love for us is to come into God’s presence daily by which I mean we take time to become still and acknowledge his presence. We focus on him the way you focus your attention on someone you are speaking with. It’s kind of hard to experience his presence if your mind is wandering of, thinking about the things you need or want to do, or keep repeating in your mind how much someone hurt you, or how much you failed at something. You can’t have proper communication with someone if you don’t turn your attention to them. You have to be present in the moment, and the same goes for communication with God.
Yet with God we don’t seem to be used to do this since, after all, God is omnipresent and with us all the time, which indeed He is. But still an awareness of this presence is not likely to come if we don’t intentionally turn our attention to him, and him only, without having other occupations in the back of our mind. Hurts, activities, how we can fix things and what we can do to be seen and loved by people.
Yet the lover of our soul is always right there with us by our side. We only have to turn our face to “see” him (we can see God in the spiritual realm) and to listen so we can hear him speaking to us, often through a subtle tought in our own mind, that’s how he usually speaks. He doesn’t have to shout with a booming voice (although he still might, if needed) because He is near to us. And we can have a conversation with him like we can with everyone else. Just quiet all the other voices in your mind and listen. You will hear him.

Another way to renew our mind is to read the bible (you might want to start with the new testament, the book John is a good place to start and then the other gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke and the rest of the NT).
But although everyone can read the bible you can only understand it through the Holy Spirit, who is the spirit of God that lives inside every believer.
So when I read it I take time to listen to the Holy Spirit to reveal to me what it means and how it speaks to my own life. I do this through meditating on it, so He can bring thoughts to my mind about what it means so it comes alive and is not just some dead meaningless book I’m reading.

The thing that mostly speaks to me though about God’s love for me is when I ponder the cross.
That’s the moment in time where God revealed his love for us more then anywhere else.
I was just reading in the (bible)book of Luke about the last supper Jesus had with his disciples before He was crucified.
It speaks about two cups of wine Jesus took and told the disciples to drink and keep doing that in the future as a reminder of what they stand for. I believe the first cup is a picture of the forgiveness of sin we have through the blood of Jesus that was shed in our place and therefore erased every guilt we have.
Then in a similar way it speaks of the bread Jesus took and broke and gave to his disciples as a picture of the body of Jesus that was torn for us on the cross so we could be forgiven and did’t have to pay the penalty of our sin ourselves. He did that for us.

God is like a judge that gives someone a sentence to pay a huge fine because that is what justice requires. He also knows though that this person is not able to pay this fine in his whole life no matter how hard he works.
Then the judge, after pronouncing the punishment, takes out his checkbook and pays the fine himself. God is like that judge!
The dead of Jesus, the son of God who came down from heaven to us, was the payment of the punishment we owed to God.
And God now sees us as someone who’s debt is payed and we are now in rightstanding with God.
Jesus was our ransom. The price that was paid so we could be delivered from the consequences of our sin.

The second cup is called the cup of the covenant. We are not just debtfree to God but He now makes a binding agreement with us. A treaty, a covenant that cannot be broken. Like a marriage that is to be for a lifetime. Except that God will never divorce us.
It’s called the blood of the covenant because the blood of Jesus is the assurance that it won’t be broken. This covenant is not based on our good works but based upon what Jesus did for us. Upon the death He died in our place of which the blood speaks since it was poored out when He was killed.
When this truth, the meaning of the blood of Jesus that was poured out for us, truly sinks in so we understand it with our heart and not just with our head, then at last the light of truth shines through all the darkness of the lies and we can truly say: indeed I am God’s beloved. And the more it sinks in, the more we become rooted and grounded in love. Then we start to blossom, and become the person we were made to be. The person God was seeing all along when He looked at us. And then the world and we ourselves start to see the beautiful person God made us. It may have been covered by dirt like a rough diamont, but God is not fooled by the dirt and He sees our true beauty and worth, that no amount of sin can ever erase.

You are God’s beloved

So BE loved

You can’t earn it and therefore you don’t have to

Just be and receive his love

Let him wash you clean and remove the filth of you

You cannot do that yourself

Enjoy the bath, it smells great

Be blessed!

Identity in Christ

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.
Galatians 2:20

All very well, we repented of our sin, which is obvious we all have, but how do we keep from sinning again? Is that even possible?
Yes and no…
The bible says no man is good but God. To a degree bad men can still do good things btw, but at it’s core we are sinful and even our good deeds are stained with wrong motiations, pride and selfishness.
So our core nature is corrupt, our very essence.
How then do we live holy lives? How do we submit to the will of God and not continue to put ourselves above God and others?
There is only one way we can do that. When we repent and start believing in God our sins are not only forgiven but He changes us from the inside. He gives us a new heart.
Jesus Christ (his spirit) himself lives now inside of us and because of that we are able to surrender to God and live according to his will and standard.
God does not fix our old sinful nature. Rather He reckons it to have been killed when Jesus was killed on the cross. Because that is what we deserved. So Jesus died in our place and now sees us as having paid the penalty for our sin, which is death.

He does not leave us death though. Just as Jesus rose from the death and He looked totally different after that, so in a sense we are raised from the death and we are now a totally new person. The bible even calles it born again. So we now have the perfect nature of Jesus, because as the bible says our spirit is now united with His spirit. And rather than God becoming defiled by us the opposite happens: we are made pure because of our unity with The One that is pure, God himself.
So we don’t have to anxiously strive to start living holy in our own strength all of a sudden and walk on our toes for the rest of our lives. Instead God gave us a new heart, a new spirit that is perfect and good. The only thing it takes to conform our behaviour to that new nature we now have inside is to lean on God. To trust that He indeed is now our righteousness. That we are holy and can live holy because He is holy and we are one with Him.
It can take time to learn this and we might be working on doing this to an increasing degree our whole lives. The christian live is a journey that we walk with God and the more we spend time with Him the more we become like him in our daily living. Our spirit is now saved and made perfect but we still have to surrender our soul (mind, will and emotions) and body to this spirit because we still have sinhabits so our mind needs to be renewed by the truth of who we are now and who God is for us daily.
But we don’t have to do this on our own. He guides us in doing this and we get to do this together with other believers so we can encourage eachother and be reminded of the truth every day.

My old nature died with Christ (Jesus) and I now have a heart that is pure, whole and healed.

Mediator

Between heaven and earth

If there is a messenger. A mediator, one amoung a thousand. To show man His (God’s) righteousness. Then He (God) says: “Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom! (Jesus)”
Job 33:23-24

There is one God and one mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.
1 Timothy 2:5

God loves us so much He is willing to forgive us and yet He is not willing to do that without a ransom,
without someone paying the penalty for our sin. Someone who paid the price we owed to righteousness, we owed to God.
Why? Because otherwise we would not learn what righteousness is as I mentioned in earlier posts.

Read also “Creator’s joy”.

So we needed a mediator. Someone that could reconcile us back to God and make us in rightstanding with Him again.
Someone that loved us that much He was willing to give his life in exchange.
His life in our place. His life for our life.
Someone that deemed us worthy to die for. Even while we were sinners.
Someone that saw a great treasure when looking at humanity, at every single one of us individual, and saw something that was to be greatly desired and worth suffering for. Yes worth giving up all that He had. Worth giving up the glory and comfort of heaven and becoming like one of us. Suffering like all humans suffer. And even becoming so small He had to grow and learn the way all humans have to learn and develop.
Someone who was perfect and never sinned, and yet was willing to become a humble baby and live among hostile man. And even to die on a cross. Mocked, scourged, rejected and killed.
And yet He did all that for the very ones that rejected and killed Him.

They thought they killed a man.
Little did they know He was the Son of God who had come down from heaven to do just that: to die. That in fact He had surrendered himself willingly so that they could be saved instead of having to die themselves.
I am speaking now of the spiritual death we have if we are separated from God through our sin and the eternal condemnation this eventually will bring to us if we don’t repent. Then we spiritually die. The bible calles this the second death.
If we accept his sacrifice, his life that He gave for us, we become alive again spiritually and are united with God. And we have eternal life with Him. And yes one day our body will be raised from the death as well. It will be new, whole, healthy and perfect. But even now we can partake of some of the change this will bring to our bodies. Even now we can be healed and even now the dead can be raised and already have. (just do a google-search if you don’t believe me) All because Jesus carried our sin with it’s consequences in our place. So we even don’t have to be sick anymore.
I’m not saying sickness is a result of direct personal sin, but at it’s root the cause of sin is the depraved nature of a mankind that is fallen away from God. Once we see the provision God gave for us to be healed, through Jesus who carried not only our sin but also our sickness when He died in our place, we can be free from all disease. We just have to believe it.
But the greatest thing is we can be in right standing with God again if we choose to accept the life that He gave in our place. If we repent and say:

“Yes, I need you, I was selfish and lived my life for me, I put myself above you God, and did not acknowledge you and give you the honor that was only due to you. I made a little god of myself and others and gave things and people a place in my life that only you should have.
I repent for not believing in you and I now acknowledge you as God over my life and surrender to you now and every day of my life is yours from now on. I give you both my sinful past so you can erase all my sin and make me clean again. And I give you my today and my future so you can change me and do what you want to do in and through my life. Show me your plan for me, show me your will and help me to surrender to it.
Thank you that you are now with me and even in me. I am yours forever.”

The cross

The bible calles it the wisdom of God
And foolishness to the world

What made God give up his Son
Let Him become a man and die on a cross?
What made Him do that?

“For God so loved the world…”
The bible says

What extravagant love is this?

I did not always have a conviction of sin
I love and believe in God as long as I rememeber
And I did not understand why Jesus had to die for me
I just knew it was true
And the cross gave me a sense of awe
Now and then

Later I became more aware of my sinfulness
It’s not about following rules
Having no sex before marriage
Going to church every week
Those things are important
But our behaviour comes from what’s in our heart
And to a degree we can modify this from the outside
And look good by living up to certain standards

But I’ve come to see more my true sinful nature
With which we all were born
And which only a touch from God can free us from
It wasn’t just about eating a forbidden apple
Like a child might take a cookie without permission
Although this was no ordinary “apple”
And eating it had certain consequences
It was also not that us eating a wrong fruit made God angry

What happens when people don’t obey the laws made by a king?
What happens when they don’t ackowledge his autority?
When they appoint there own rulers and crown another king?
If the king wants to uphold his kingdom he would have to punish
those rebels, or even put them to dead or lifelong imprisonment

You see God is the King of the world
And He allows us not to obey Him
But we shouldn’t think this has no consequences
Or how could his kingdom otherwise stand?

The sin of Adam and Eve, and all of us
Is that we place ourselves above God
It doesn’t matter how big our transgression is
In it’s core there are no degrees in sin
Our sin is not just to do something forbidden
It is that we rebelled against the king of the universe
That makes every transgression though seemingly small so big

So why did God send his son Jesus to earth to die on a cross?
I believe Jesus paid the price we deserved to pay for our sin
I believe the suffering Jesus went through is a picture
Of the severeness of our sinfulness
If we have trouble to see the depth of our depravity
The severeness of our sin
We just have to look at the cross
And see what price needed to be paid
To pay of our debt we had through sin

The righteousness of God looks different than ours
He didn’t want us to pay the price we deserved
But righteousness still had to be done
Otherwise we would not learn what is good and what is not

It’s not that God is mean and didn’t love Jesus
But He was able to pay a price we were not able to pay
Because He never sinned He was able to endure all suffering
To endure the darkness of men’s soul that now came on Him
And because He was pure darkness had no hold on him
And he rose from the death
Thereby declaring: it is finished, the price is paid
The debt we had to righteousness is settled
We are now in right standing with God
United with Him forever

A serpent on a pole

When the Israëlites lived in the desert years ago,
They once encountered a large plague of snakes that bit them.
Many were dying.
God revealed to Moses that the cause of the plague was the sin of the people.
But God gave them a cure.
Moses put a bronze serpent on a pole and stuck it in the ground for all to see.
When the people looked at it they were healed.

This is a picture of the cross on which Jesus would die many years later.
Jesus was not the serpent though.
The serpent was satan, also called the devil, whose power was destroyed on the cross.
When people sin it gives satan power in their lives.
When you obey someone you give that person autority.
Satan tempts men to sin and if we do it gives him power over us.

Unfortunately his intentions for us are not very good.
On the contrary they are evil and he only wants to destroy us.
God on the other hand has always our good in mind.
He loves us so much He himself paid the price that we deserved to pay for our sin.
When He died on that cross He took away satans autority over our lives
Because our debt to righteousness, our debt to God, was now paid by Jesus.
So the devil has no claim on us anymore.

However in order to experience the benefits of what Jesus did for us
We have to look at it, we have to look at the cross and what it means.
To ponder the healing and deliverance it brings to our lives.
Believing is receiving.
It’s kind of impossible to receive a gift you don’t even believe was given to you.
Faith is the hands that receive.

That’s why Jesus said that all who believe in Him are saved,
although he died for the sins of the whole world.
But He didn’t just die to save us from eternal damnation.
He died to free us from every darkness in our lives.
To heal every disease and fill every need we have.
He provided this all for us on the cross.

We just have to look and believe.

Creator’s joy

Like children were meant to be their parents delight
So we are the delight of God
He did not make us out of some need
Except his “need” to express his love

He does not need slaves
He can do anything He wants without help
He does not need subjects
To feel good about himself
And to give him a sense of selfworth

He is God
He defines everyone’s worth
His own worth comes from who He is
And He gives everything else their worth

So He decided to make creatures
That are worth everything to him
Like children are worth everything
To their parents
(or should be anyway)

So we mean the world to him
For him we were worth dying
Not because anything we did
But because we are His

He made us in his likeness
We bear his DNA
When we were born
We already had great worth

No mistake or rebellion
Or succes on our part
Can take away or ad to this

So when men rebelled
And turned away from God
He did not stop loving us
He did not turn his back to us
He did not leave us alone

No He decided to win us back
To draw our heart to him
So we would be united once again

He showed us our worth
By dying for us

How can God die?
Would that not be the end
of our existence?

To die though does not mean
That we stop to exist
Death is the absence of good things
The absence of health and beauty

For us death is the absence of God
Not that God is ever absent to us
The bible says God is even in hell
But if we do not have relationship with Him
We can’t partake of the life this gives us

In a sence we can be death
While still living on the earth
Our spirit is death
When we are not in relationship with God
When we are not in right standing with Him

But how could God die?
First He, Jesus, the Son of God
Who himself is God as well
(just bear with me for a moment)
Became a man

Once He had part of our human nature
Once He had a body
He could die

This does not mean He ceased to exist
It means his body stopped breathing
And He went to another place
He went to hell

Jesus went to hell for us
He went there in our place
Because of our rebellion against God
We deserved to go there

But God did not want us to suffer
He did not want us to be seperated
From the expression of his love
From the life He intended us to have

So Jesus went instead

Now why would God
send anyone to hell in the first place
If He loves us that much?

Truth is He didn’t
We go there through our own choices
If we choose to live seperated from Him
And not even acknowledge him as God

How can you expect to go to heaven
If you don’t want to be with God?
Since that is were HE is
And He respects your free will

You see it’s not that God is evil
And wants to punish us
And send us to hell
We choose to go there ourselves
If we don’t let him be God in our lives

Now God is righteous and holy
And He can’t do anything
That goes against who he is, his nature
That makes sense right?

How do you feel
If someone murders a child
And the killer is declared innocent
While clearly quilty?

We all have a sense of justice
No one wants criminals to be free
Roaming around in the world
Killing and stealing

We are like that
Because God is
And we were made in his image
Although much of that image has been tainted
Some traces are still left

So what should God do
About sinful men?
What would be the right response
To our killing (gossip is murder to you know)
and lying, cheating
and putting ourselves above God
and others?

It’s not that He doesn’t want to forgive
But would it be right?
Would it be just?
Would it be desired
If men could do what they want
Without consequences

How would we learn justice
Know what is right
If God didn’t show us
The result of our sin
The destruction it brings

If He didn’t show us
The nature of our crimes
Our selfish desires
Our looking down on others
Our playing God

The result of sin is death
There is no hope for this world
If sin is tolerated
Men would get worse
and hate more and more
Instead of becoming kind

How could a loving God
Tolerate our sin
And not let it have consequences
So it grows rampant
And destroys the love that is left still

It would not be love at all!

So God did the unthinkable
He did not want us to pay the price
That our sin required us to pay
He did not want us to bear
The consequences of our lives
that would send us straight to hell

He did not want us to be
Separated from his love

So He himself paid the price
That his righteousness
Required us to pay

He became a man
He lived a perfect life
He identified with us in every way
Except that He didn’t sin

Then He allowed sinful men
To captivate him
Mock him
Scourge him
To nail him on a cross

And by doing so
He paid the price
We deserved to pay

Then the unthinkable happened
Thankfully
Once again

On the third day
After they killed him
He rose from the death

And this was the sign
That our debt was paid
The debt we had through sin
Was now erased

So now everyone
Who receives this gift of life
And surrenders their life to Him in turn
Is now forever saved

And so He showed us
The price He was willing to pay

We are still his delight
We are the joy of heaven
If we let this gift unite us
With Him by whom we were made

Purpose

The purpose of life
Of yours of mine
Is it to create the universe
The earth and the sky

Or was its existence before us
Laid down for our surprise

The purpose of men
Is it to create or behold
Or may we enjoy all of Eden
With it’s Maker inside

Dare we be and behold
And trust our Maker
To inspire us with spirit
His walking by our side

Dare we let that be enough
To hold on to His love
And not let our pride refrain us
That puts up a fight

Dare we accept His free gift

Identity

Identification

Can I be living
Without doing something
Without making a product
That eyes can see or hands can hold

Can I be of value
Without writing things down

Can I be someone
When I look to the sky
When I wonder at nature
Or anything passing by

Can I be of value
When enjoying this life
When seemingly doing nothing
But beholding the sky

Can I be living
When seeing and feeling
I’m surrounded by life

When coming up rashly
Unexplainable joy
Excitement that’s above me
Captured by all

Is it enough
To feel I am living
To behold what I see
To be happy inside

Is it enough
Not to create anything
To marvel at nature
And what men had in mind
Beautiful buildings
Awesome creations
On top of it all
Life that’s inside

Is it enough
To have my identity
In being creature
Above my creating
Above playing God

To be loved and be held
To be the joy of heaven
To be an act of Deity
To be Someone’s delight

Do I accept the gift of life
Embrace it with thankfulness
Do I know Who’s I am
Is it enough?

Is it enough to be living
To enjoy what I’ve got
Or do I keep on striving
To become what I’m not

To become what I cannot be
To become what I don’t even want
To become my own god

Am I allowed
To be a creature
To enjoy life He gave me
And let God do His job

Life is a gift

You can’t earn it

You might disagree
Is not our whole society based on merits?
Unfortunately it is
Thing is that everything we can do
Comes from the potential that was given us at birth

It was all a gift
We have to work to develop these gifts, true
But even the ability to do that was given

So do we keep priding ourselves on our achievements?
Or can we live with humility
And give honor to whom it is truly due
Which in the end is always God

I’ve heard it say
That our value does not come from what we do
But what we do comes from who we are

We were made with value
And what we do or don’t do can’t influence this
We cannot add to our value by what we do
Nor can we diminish it by our mistakes

Our value is constant
And so is God’s love for us
We cannot mess up this love
Nor can we increase it
It’s already more than what we need

God will never withhold his love from us
No matter how we live
But are WE withholding HIM?

The bible says God opposes the proud
What does that mean? Why?

If we try to earn love and acceptance
We not only give honor to ourselves
For what was given to us freely
But we also block our heart
From receiving the depth of his love for us
Which is not based on merit
But freely given

Life is a gift

You can’t earn it even if you did everything perfect
That ability still comes from Him

You were made from love
The love of God

You don’t have anything to give him back for that
Except what he gave you first

So why don’t give him your life?
Give him what already belongs to him anyway

For he made you
And loves you
And wants you to experience the fullness of life
The way he intended it to be

With him
Because apart from his love
We really are handicapped
And we will always try
To find love and fulfillment
From things and people that can’t give it to us

He is the source of our life
In him we live and move
and have our being

So why not connect with this source
So we can live life fully

If you are ready
Then pray this prayer with me

Dear Jesus

Thank you for dying for me
Thank you for paying the price
That righteousness required
To settle the debt of my sin

I accept this free gift
Of forgiveness
And with your help
Because your spirit now lives inside of me
I turn from my life of sin
Of pride and selfishness
And I completely give it to you

I hold nothing back
And I give you access to every part of me
So you can change me
And make me the way you intended me to be

Show me your ways
And help me to hear your voice
So I will never turn from your side

Amen

WELCOME  into God’s family!

If you prayed this prayer and meant it
You are now adopted as his child

You are his forever
Nothing can ever separate you from him

You are a whole new creation
The bible calls it “born again”

You now have a seat in heaven
You have dual citizenship
You live on the earth in your body
But your spirit is in heaven

This is possible because
The natural and the spiritual
Are interwoven

Heaven and hell are not
Some places far away
They are inside

And hopefully we chose heaven
Rather than hell
To be the place we live from
To be the source of our life

Your body may look the same
And you might still have sinful desires
Or addictions
(many experienced they were broken off right away!)
But your spirit is made new and perfect
Without spot, no blemish

And when you learn to live
more and more from your spirit
which is now one with God’s spirit
(whom we call the Holy Spirit)
your life begins to change

You become the person
You were made to be
Pure and holy
Loving and kind

And most important
Living in harmony with you Maker
Who is the Lover of your soul

Nothing and no one can ever come close
To the fulfilment that HE gives

So welcome once again
You are now a child of God

Try to connect with other believers
Your spiritual brothers and sisters
Since they will help you to grow in your faith
And teach you spiritual principles
You will need

But most important
Spent time every day with God
Sit down and talk with him
Don’t make it a monologue
He wants to talk back

So listen for his voice
When you quiet all the noise
All the other voices in your head
that try to get your attention
you will hear His

A book that really helped me to hear his voice is

“Can you hear me? Tuning in to the God Who Speaks”
By Brad Yersak

Love’s Price

God is like the sun
We cannot look straight into his face

So How could Love have a companion
The companion of men
When we can’t even look at him from a distance
Let alone being near

At the beginning of our time
When men could see his face
They decided not to
And go their own way

And so they became dark within

Then how could God share his love
With his newly made companion
If this companion left his side

Even this possibility God had in mind

So before creating men
God already made a plan

God had a meeting
Where God the father told his plan
If men were to reject him
Jesus (his son) would rescue them

He would take in all darkness
That had come over men
Take it all on him
Drink everything

Death had power
Over those walking in sin
And it was the sin of men
Jesus now carried within

So Jesus allowed death to take him
By the hands of men

It was all in God’s plan

Jesus drank men’s darkness
So men could receive back the Light
The light of God
That was to be the light of men

This could not have happened
When Jesus would have sinned
But there was no fault in Jesus
And the master of darkness could not hold him

So Jesus rose from the dead
And set many captives free
With them you and me

Everyone who chooses to walk by his side
He gave a promise for even after this life

That by his side we’ll live on forever
And now God lives inside
And we may look at his face once again

So God gave an invitation
To those who turned away

Accept the life of Jesus
He freely gave to save
It was the greatest price
Love ever paid
